For all the senses

People appreciate gardens in different ways. Some enjoy gazing out at their flower beds, while others like to get their hands dirty working in the vegetable patch. For children, the garden is a place to play.

The owners of this home wanted a garden that fulfilled the desires of the whole family, says landscape designer Robin Shafer.

"They requested a great deal of perfumed plants, specifically roses. There was also a view to the garden acting as a playground, with sculptural aspects included in the design."

Flowers were chosen for their seasonal colour as well as their scent.

Daphnes, violets, heliotrope and brunfelsia grow in terraced flower beds, which were created to accommodate a sloped site.

In order to further utilise available space, bay trees grow against the walls, and star jasmine is trained as a wall cover.

A swing seat adorns the highest terraced area. This space is screened by a camellia hedge, creating an enclosed garden for children.

"Herbs and edible plants, such as runner beans, grow here. Timber tripods add visual interest to two vegetable patches," says Shafer.

A 10m drop from the front of the property to the back, prompted Shafer to create terraces. This also allowed for every space to be utilised.
