Outdoor rooms

property sits in isolation – there is always a backdrop that influences
both the architecture and the landscape.
For this Greenhithe project, it was a picturesque native bush setting that helped
inspire the landscape design by Robin Shafer of Robin Shafer Design.
"The design needed to complement the setting, but the architecture of the
house required a degree of formality," Shafer says. "There was also
a need to link several small outdoor spaces to create a flow."
To screen neighbouring properties, Shafer introduced pleached Ficus hillii trees
and tropical and native palms. These trees provide the required height, but don't
take up too much space.
The soft landscaping, by Antony Shortall Landscapes, includes native korokia
hedges, which add formality and help frame the outdoor rooms. They are also a
visual link to the surrounding bush.
A full-height glass window in the wall enclosing the pool connects the poolscape
with a lawn beyond. Dwarf mondo grass between the pavers helps soften the look.
