Outdoor rooms

No property sits in isolation – there is always a backdrop that influences both the architecture and the landscape.
For this Greenhithe project, it was a picturesque native bush setting that helped inspire the landscape design by Robin Shafer of Robin Shafer Design.

"The design needed to complement the setting, but the architecture of the house required a degree of formality," Shafer says. "There was also a need to link several small outdoor spaces to create a flow."

To screen neighbouring properties, Shafer introduced pleached Ficus hillii trees and tropical and native palms. These trees provide the required height, but don't take up too much space.

The soft landscaping, by Antony Shortall Landscapes, includes native korokia hedges, which add formality and help frame the outdoor rooms. They are also a visual link to the surrounding bush.

A full-height glass window in the wall enclosing the pool connects the poolscape with a lawn beyond. Dwarf mondo grass between the pavers helps soften the look.
Ongoing plant maintenance is carried out by Antony Shortall Landscapes.

Landscape designer Robin Shafer says creating structure within a garden is important. This can be done formally or informally, however it is important to consider proportion in order to create spaces or garden rooms that complement the architectural style of the house.

This garden was designed by Robin Shafer Design and planted and maintained by Antony Shortall Landscapes.

A window in this pool wall creates a visual connection between outdoor rooms.
